turfRad by TerraRad
turfRad is a field-scale soil moisture mapping system designed specifically for golf courses. Developed by TerraRad, a company specializing in environmental remote sensing technologies, turfRad brings advanced sensing science into everyday turf management.
TerraRad’s expertise in passive microwave radiometry – originally used in environmental and earth observation research – has been adapted to provide reliable moisture insights at the course level. The result is a system built on scientific precision, but designed for real-world turf operations.
This real-time data, combined with GPS for precise location tracking, enables you to optimize irrigation systems, save water and improve consistency and playability of your turf – all with minimal disruption to your workflow.

Utilizing passive L-band microwave remote sensing technology, turfRad measures naturally emitted microwave energy from the soil, similar to satellite-based sensing. Because the system is passive, it does not transmit any signal; it simply listens to natural soil emissions to measure moisture in the top 3 to 4 inches of the root zone.
Mounted on mowers or utility vehicles, the sensor collects soil moisture data continuously while you mow, requiring no additional labor and no disruption to normal maintenance routines. Sensors can be mounted on multiple machines to increase coverage and scanning efficiency.
Each scan is uploaded via Wi-Fi and processed into a detailed moisture map inside the turfRad portal. Superintendents can view full-course moisture coverage, overlay irrigation layouts and indentify dry or wet areas at the sprinkler-head level. This real-time data helps optimize irrigation, reduce water use, improve moisture uniformity, lower pumping and electricity costs and enhance overall playability.
